Principal’s Update & February Newsletter

Newsletter – 2018-02

Dear families,

We hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas break and New Years.

We have a few important announcements for February, please also take a moment to review the important reminders on the second page.

I Love to Read Month

Last year, we started a new and hopefully lasting initiative, I Love to Read Month. We have continued this tradition again this year. During the month, every student was sent home a gold medal circle to record their reading. They are on display in our hallway and will be used to fill Hemmingford’s gold medal. All our students will be participating in paired reading every day at 9:55.

We are encouraging parents to participate in the act. Please share photos of reading at home to our Facebook page.

On February 12 and 13, students will be going on a trip to Chapters.

We will be collecting used books from now until February 16. If you would like to donate books, please drop them in the box beside the gym. Our used book sale will be from February 19th– 22nd during recess. Books will range from 10¢ to 1$. If you would like, you may send your child to school with change for them to do their shopping at recess.

Finally, on March 1, we will have our literacy night. The event is open to all families from the area. We will have plenty of fun and exciting activities for everyone to participate in, including a Scholastic Bookfair.

Spaghetti Supper

Our Annual Spaghetti Supper is set for March 24. I would like to encourage all parents to register online on our school website to volunteer for the event. You can register at

Calendar Change

Due to the snow day of January 23, 2018, we will now have a regular school day on April 16, 2018. This will be a physical education day, same as the Tuesday-Friday schedule because the day lost was a physical education day. A downloadable copy of the calendar can be found here —>

Report Cards & Parent Teacher Interviews

Term 2 report cards will be sent home on March 1. Our parent-teacher interviews will take place on March 15 (evening) and March 16 (day). We would like to encourage all families to take advantage of this important time to speak with your child(ren)’s teachers.

Hot Lunch and School Trips

Our proposed field trip on February 12, 2018, will affect families with students in pre-k and grades 3-6 who have signed up for hot lunch. We have worked with the hot lunch provider to try and find a solution for all parties and the following arrangement will apply both to the trip next Monday and for future trips on a day with hot lunch service.

If you have signed up for a lunch service, Mangeons Maison is asking that you communicate with them that you will not need the service on that day. On your next bill, just indicate a credit for the amount previously paid. For example, families cancelling service on February 12 should pay $5 less on their March bill than the total for that month.

This procedure will apply to future field trips as well.

Valentine’s Day

As one of the activities to celebrate Valentine’s Day, we are encouraging students to wear red or pink instead of the uniform.

Olympic Spirit

On February 22nd, show your Canadian pride in honour of the Olympic Games. Students can wear Canadian apparel and colours to show their support.

We would like to wish everyone a wonderful month of February.
